Event Details

This is the first international event hosted by East West Martial Arts, and SMAC (Sport Martial Arts Circuit).

You must register by 11:55 p.m. Thursday Oct. 7th to get the preregistered price.  If you register at the door the competition prices will be $5 more.

This tournament will have martial arts events (http://battleoftheborder2010martialarts.eventbrite.com/) as well as grappling events.  The Grappling Section of the tournament will have 3 events:

  • Wrestling
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu No Gi
  • Competitors can compete in 1-3 divisions.

    The tournament will take place in the 30,000 sq. ft. convention area of the Causeway Bay Hotel in Lansing, Michigan.

    Tournament Date: Saturday, October 9th, 2010

    Competitiors Welcome: Any BJJ white to brown belt belt, men and women, wrestlers, and anyone wishing to test their skills!

    Start Time: 9:30 a.m.sharp!  Be there early or you may miss your division.

    Weigh-in's:

    Weigh-in's will be Friday, October 8th from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

    If you cannot make this weigh-in time, you may weigh-in and Saturday morning from 7-9:00 a.m.

      The order of divisions will be:

    1) Men's brown and purple belt (simultaneous)

    2) Men's blue belt and women's divisions* (simultaneous)

    3) Men's white belt

    4) No gi divisions (going from advanced to beginner)


    *Women's weight classes TBD the day of tournament.

    Grappling Weight Classes/Divisions:

    • Light Weight - 154 lbs & below.
    • Welter Weight - 155 - 169.9 lbs.
    • Middle Weight - 170 - 184.9 lbs.
    • Light Heavy Weight - 185 - 199.9 lbs.
    • Heavy Weight - 200 & Above

    Gi divisions will be divided by belts: white, blue, purple, and brown.

    No gi divisions will be divided by

    • Beginner (less than one years grappling experience)
    • Intermediate (1-3 years)
    • Advanced (more than 3 years experience)

    Wrestling Weight Classes/Divisions:

    • Cadet Weight: 65-78 lbs
    • Juniors Weight: 80-94 lbs
    • Fly Weight: 95-109 lbs
    • Bantam Weight: 110-124 lbs
    • Feather Weight: 125-139 lbs
    • Light Weight: 140-154 lbs
    • Welter Weight: 155-169 lbs
    • Middle Weight: 170-184 lbs
    • Light Heavy Weight: 185-199 lbs
    • Heavy Weight: 200-229 lbs
    • Super Heavy Weight: 230 lbs and Over

    BJJ Rules of Engagement:

    Takedown: 2 pts.  Passing the Guard: 3 pts.  Knee on the Stomach: 2 pts.  Top Mount: 4 pts.   Back Mount: 4 pts.   Reversals and Sweeps:  2 pts.


    Time Limits: 4 minutes for white belts, 5 minutes for blue, 6 minutes for purple, and 7 minutes for brown belts.  Draws decided by advantages or 3 minute tie breaker.  Advantages are gained by near submissions, near passes, near takedowns and near sweeps. 

    Not Allowed:  Neck cranks, biting, eye gouging, finger twisting, hair pulling, heel hooks, knee twisting, small joint manipulation (fingers and toes), and slamming from the guard, back, or to escape submissions. 

    Submissions Allowed: Arm and shoulder locks, ankle locks, chokes, straight knee bars, wrist locks, key lock/figure four on the foot (with pressure in the direction of their leg), calf lock, bicep lock.

    12 Point Rule: If one competitior has 12 points more than the other, the match will be stopped and the winner declared.


    NOTE: POOR SPORTSMANSHIP WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION!
